9-29

Today Mr. Schick missed class because he was at a wedding. Today we had to watch a video called population pyramids. Then after the video we had to answer 4 questions that I did on my other blog. The questions were hard to me. I also did not like the video so the questions were even harder to find since I would blank out.
  1. According to the Population Reference Bureau's "2013 World Population Data Sheet", 271 are born every minute, and 106 die every minute. That's a global net population increase of 165 per minute. This lesson was published on May 5th. What's the estimated global population increase exactly one week later (May 12th)?  A: over 10 million       B: 20,739      C: 1155    D: 1,663,200
  2. As a country slows in population growth, its pyramid shape will  A: become wider at the base and narrower at the top         B: be inverted          C: become more rectangular            D: bulge in the middle
  3. What does a Population Pyramid NOT give you information about?    A: birth rates         B: actual number of people        C: life expectancy         D: death rates
  4. Which continent would have the most fast-growth pyramids?   A: Africa         B:  Asia          C: North America         D: South America

9-26

Today in class we looked at everyone's facts on their country they chose. I chose ivory coast and an interesting fact I saw was 30% of children under the age of 5 are overweight. They are ranked 16 in the world! Another interesting fact is 31,200 people have died from HIV/Aids since 2012. Ranked 13 in the world for that category. Sub-Saharan African nations make the least money you can make. The lowest amount was $400 it was the Democratic Republic of Congo.

9-25

Today in class we looked more into what fertility rate meant. First the people who didn't get their tests yesterday got their tests today. Then we talked more about fertility rate and even though the united states is under 2.1 it is still increasing because of immigrants entering our country. Then we talked about push factors and pull factors.

9-24

Today I arrived at class late. When I got to class I received my test I didn't even want to look at it I thought I didn't do too well. When I finally looked at it I thought wow I didn't do too bad. I got an 85 on the test and I did best on the essays. I thought the essays were going to be my worst part. I did best on the essay about globalization I got a surprising 10/10. Then we talked about the test and i got to fix the ones I got wrong and add info to the essays.

push and pull forces

Today in class we talked about net migration a little bit, we also talked about push and pull forces that would either push someone to leave a country or pull someone into the country. The last thing we got to talk was Fertility Rate. Here are some of my notes:
  Push forces

  • Civil war
  • environmental degradation
  • unemployment
  • religious persecution
Pull forces
  • Better economic opportunity
  • better health services
  • religious freedom
  • political freedom
TFR: average number of children born per woman
for a population to remain the same, the TFR rate must be 2.1
higher than 2.1: population rises
lower than 2.1: population falls

CIA

Today in class we visited the CIA website and looked at life expectancy and explored all about the website. I now found out that the U.S is in 42 for life expectancy with males having 78 years now instead of 77. Here are notes from class.
  • Crude birth rate: number of births per 1000 of the population
  • Crude death rate: number of deaths per 1000 of the population
Rate of natural increase
  • Produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate
  • This give us the annual natural growth rate- in percentage form - for a country or region
  • Immigration- coming into a country - written as a positive number
  • emigration- leaving the country - written as negative number

Test Day

Today in class we took a test. The multiple choice part of the test and the short answers were fairly easy. I think I did good on that part. I did not do so good on the essay part. With a little more of study on Globalization I think I would've been fine. I feel like I did fairly decent on this test.

Did You Know

Today we watched a video on intersecting facts that I had never heard of before. One fact is China will soon become the number one English speaking country in the world that's how big of a population they have. Another fact is the top 10 in-demand jobs did not exist in 2004, Teachers are teaching students and preparing them for jobs that do not yet exist. 1 out of 8 couples married in the US last year met online, this prove that technology can do a lot. My initial reaction to this video was I was shocked after seeing these facts. Technology plays an important role in my life. I wonder what I would be like with no technology.

Seat change

Today right when we entered class we had our seats changed. But that wouldn't last too long. People complained about where they were sitting since they went near their friends. I was fine with where I was sitting. We finally came to a conclusion that we would vote for if we wanted to change or if we wanted to stay. Most people voted to change but a few did vote to stay. Majority voted to change o we changed seats and I am back to where I was sitting since the beginning of school.
